Using Videos in Groups for Custom Audiences

Video Transcript

All right guys, this is one of my favorite strategies to be able to cue up a way for you to really get a good, strong return on ad spend right out of the gate. A lot of times you want to target members of a group. If you're in, like for instance, for me, it would be digital marketing groups. If you're in groups that are niche specific and that niche is your industry, your target industry we've already talked about different ways that you can become a subject matter expert and build credibility. And that's awesome. But now let's get down into some of the really specific tactics to maximize your return on ad spend. A lot of times you can't just throw an ad to anybody. That's a member of a group, especially if it's a private group and our ads are always, we get this kind of stuff. We're moving some detailed targeting options. Some interests, demographics and behaviors are being discontinued. A lot of times that's because of lawsuits and things like that. It just becomes a real pain in the neck to try to keep up with it. But this is a fantastic way that is not going anywhere. This is a built in way that I've had a lot of really good success with. So what we want to do is anywhere in our ads manager for logged into business manager and within the ad section, anywhere where we're at,

Okay. So over here, you'll click on this little hamburger option menu, and you'll have these breakouts and these move around for whatever reason Facebook is like story, order them. I don't know why, but you're going to find the one that says audiences and you're going to click it. It's going to load up all of the custom audiences that you have. If you don't have any, then you will get a list like this. If you already have some, you'll see the custom audiences over here and you'll want to click create audience. And then from that drop down, you want to click custom audience. If I don't have any already saved for an account, then what I'll do is I'll say like create a custom audience. And then it's going to ask you, and by the way, this step will happen after you click this as well, depending on what your out you've gone. So now I'm going to say a video. So I want to create a custom audience for anybody that engages with a video. Now it's going to ask me this engagement, right? You get to pick how much engagement is required for them to fall into this custom audience for them to feed it. So people who have viewed at least three seconds, we'll give you the largest audience size people who've watched at least 95% of your video will give you the smallest audience size, but it will likely give you the you know, the people that were most interested. I personally, if I'm trying to target, like for the purpose of this video, I'm trying to target everybody within a group. So I want to get as many people as I can from that group. And so I'm going to put at least three people at least three seconds of the video, okay, your retention, you can set this to whatever you want. If you only want people that have engaged with something in, in the last one day or whatever 10 days you can do 90 days, I generally leave it to 365 days at the time of the filming of this. That is the max is the maximum time is 365 days. I leave it at that because again, I am trying to create the largest custom audience size that I can. Then you just name it. This will be demo example, demo example, alright name this, whatever you want. This can be like you know, Facebook group, target audience, whatever I need to choose the video. So the way this works is when you go into choose videos, you'll have a list of videos that are in here. So if I did like in here, I can go select any of these videos that I want and hit confirm. And now that means that anybody who watches at least three seconds of any of those videos will be added to this audience so I can create the audience right now. What that does is it gives me the opportunity to post any of these. In this case, these three videos do 10, do five, whatever you want to do, post those videos in the groups. And then whenever somebody interacts with it, they're automatically added to this custom audience. So now when you go set up a custom ad, you can literally run ads only to people that are in this custom audience. Once the audience size is large enough. And that way you can literally reach directly out to people that were in a group engaged in a video. The, I like to do this, I targeted I've targeted digital marketers. So for a subject matter expertise, I will give you an example. I like to share this video. And so I will just save it as a bookmark and then I copy and paste it. And so what will happen is I, a common question that gets asked in digital marketing groups is people can't get their their pages indexed. So whether it's about keyword research or backlink research or whatever, in this case, getting a webpage indexed, instead of me having to re-explain it and reestablish myself as a subject matter expert, every time I will go in and just drop this video in the group, and anybody who watches at least three seconds of this video will become added to my custom audience. I can now run ads to that custom audience. So what is the niche that you are in that you are a subject matter expert, go find the Facebook groups like we've already talked about, definitely interact with people in the group help to establish yourself as a subject matter expert while maintaining, you know, be highly personable and approachable, you will start getting the the messages like we've already talked about people reaching out to you, but also if you know that there's something that comes up regularly, you can, you can do this as well. So one thing to note on this you can do this by setting up like a Facebook pixel and dropping a link to your until like a webpage that has a tutorial. And I have a full tutorial about this that I like it when people go to it and I can pixel them and tag them and I can retarget them on other things as well. But the things that I like most about this is that it allows me to if I have a straight Facebook video, I've found that Facebook's algorithm promotes it with higher. It gets viewed more. The reason I say that is because Facebook is never going to try to promote something that, that takes you off of their platform, right? You can test that by if you have a pretty large audience, go post something and say, go view it on YouTube and right. YouTube and the, and the actual posts. And you'll see that just doesn't give me any views. The algorithm of Facebook does not want to promote something that is going to take somebody off of the platform. So that's one step, but by making it a Facebook video, it, we can definitely help eliminate or reduce that. The other side of it is many groups will have rules about self-promotion. They they'll prohibit self-promotion. So if somebody has a question about how to get a webpage indexed in 2022, and I drop my article in there, it is possible that the group administrators will tell you that you're not allowed to do self promotion. And since I'm taking them to my personal site they can find on that. So this is a way around that I'm not taking them anywhere. I normally have an intro and an outro segment of the video, like an animated logo. I don't have that on this. I I've uploaded just me answering the question, the 33 minute video, 33 and a half minute video, where I walk somebody through everything that they need on how to how to get, you know, a page index. It answers their question thoroughly. And at no point, am I saying, send me a private message or come join my Facebook group. Or if you pay me, I will, you know, I will get your page index for you. I'm not doing that. I'm literally just answering their question, but I'm doing it in such a way that through the Facebook video, I can set up a custom audience to do it. Then I can run ads to them. However I want. It's an awesome, awesome way to set up a good, solid custom audience. And you get a very low cost of per click. You're your return on your ad spend goes up tremendously when you do this, because a very specific group that you're reaching out to, I hope that helps guys enjoy let's check out the next day.

Select "Audiences"

In your Facebook Ads Manager, select the off-canvas menu icon and then click "Audiences".

Create the Audience

Click the blue "Create Audience" button.

Select "Custom Audience"

Select "Custom Audience" from the drop-down menu.

Select "Video"

For the purpose of this video, select "Video" as the source of the engagement we are targeting.

Choose Engagement Type

In this section, you'll choose the amount of the video that the user must watch prior to being placed into the custom audience. Because in our example we are trying to target anyone in the group, so we will choose the shortest time segment of 3 seconds.

Click "Choose Videos"

Now that you've selected your level of engagement, you need to select the video(s) that will feed the audience. To do this, let's click "Choose Videos."

Choose Video File(s)

Choose the video file(s) that will feed the custom audience. While our example will only use one video, you can certainly include more than one.

A good tactic for this is to create a video for each of the commonly asked questions that you're going to use within Facebook groups. If you have 5-6 videos, they can all feed the Custom Audience with users who meet the engagement requirement.

Name It and Go!

Now that we've selected the video(s) whose engagement will feed the custom audience, we need to set our retention and then name and describe our audience.

For this example, 365 days is the max time period that I can enter, and I'll choose that. Some people choose to do 60-90 days, depending on the timely nature of whatever their offer will be. This is totally up to you.
